Rivendell

by Alan Lee

Rivendell by Alan Lee Rivendell is one of the most stunning of the fifty beautiful paintings which Alan Lee created for the fully illustrated centenary edition of The Lord of the Rings.

Alan used the same layout as Tolkien did in his original illustration with regard to Elrond's house, the stream, mountains and trees and so on, but produced a remarkable pure water colour in his own unique and almost ethereal style.

It is common practice to print from photographic transparencies, avoiding the dangers of transporting and possibly damaging the original. However, the transparency for Rivendell was faulty, thus the reproduction in the book is very different from the original painting. The greys in the mountains took on a purple hue, and the yellows and golds in the trees changed colour drastically.

A new transparency was produced, to ensure a perfect match with the original colours for this limited edition print, which is exactly the same size as the original, but without the watercolour border. Of course, the representation shown here does not do justice to the original, nor the print.
